Why New Resellers Fail At Their Flipping Business

Why New Resellers Fail At Their Flipping Business

Thank you so much for spending your time with us! We would be so grateful if you could take a minute and leave us a review.

Why do new resellers fail at their flipping business? Let’s talk about what can sabotage your business before you even get started or once you get started.

A big reason why new resellers fail at their flipping business is not having confidence. That is good news because confidence is something you can grow in this business, and it’s a huge game changer.

Learning Confidence

When I was a kid, the youngest of seven, I often went to yard sales with my mom. Every Saturday she would circle the classifieds looking for yard sales that looked like they had cool stuff. I have fond memories of going to yard sales with my mom, and I absolutely loved it.

My mom was always someone who wasn’t scared to go to a yard sale or a flea market and chat with people to negotiate. She had a skill set that she built up, and that’s something I also did. The first time I ever went to the flea market by myself I just walked through quickly, almost speed walking because I was too nervous to talk to somebody. It felt weird to ask somebody a price on an item. It was a complete waste of time and I saw some really cool stuff I missed out on.

Maybe that’s where you are right now. I used to think if I asked somebody the price of an item, it meant I had to buy it. You are not obligated to buy anything or make up an excuse.

Now I’ve built up my skills and everyone at the flea market knows me and I’m happy to talk to people about price, walk away, do the research, come back, and negotiate. And if we can’t strike a deal, I’ll walk away from the item.

How To Build Confidence

Confidence is a skill that can be learned. If you are struggling with it, know that you can get past it. Just keep doing it over and over again, and it will get easier. You will get more comfortable too. You have to do it to make progress.

It’s a simple business and as long as you know what you are willing to pay for an item, you know when to walk away.

If you’re a beginner flipper and you’re nervous about negotiation or shipping, just try it. Surround yourself with like-minded people; connect with other flippers. Ask for advice and then try it. You can totally learn how to ship a large item or negotiate an item down at the flea market.

Consistency builds confidence, so the more you do it, the better you’ll get.

We’ve figured out how to ship NordicTracks, dining room sets, and even a 14-foot tall bus wash. Start with something small and affordable so you can learn and make mistakes with a cheaper item. As you get better, start negotiating and on more expensive items. Everything is figure-outable. Get started now, don’t wait. The longer you wait to get started, the longer it will take you to build up these skills.

Robert Stephenson

I grew up in Central Florida and have lived here my whole life. I first got into buying and selling items when I was 16 years old, and have been hooked ever since. It has mostly been a hobby that makes some extra cash, but sometimes it serves as my main income as well. I don't plan on stopping any time soon. I find too many fun toys for my family (or myself), and just love the whole process.
