Today we’ll dive into the importance of understanding your motivation for success.
Know Your Why
A lot of people in the self-development world call this your why. Simon Sinek did a really big Ted Talk about finding the why of your business, and he brought the idea to big businesses to help them find the core of what they do. The same can be applied to resellers.
Think about why you are trying to resell. What is the point? And if you know your why, you’ll continue to do it even as motivation comes and goes.
Seek Ways To Stay Motivated
Our hope for this podcast is that we encourage and motivate you to get results in your flipping business with tips that can help. We listen to podcasts ourselves to get motivated and encouraged. Sometimes we come back from a run, and we’ll hop on a podcast and record one episode, say we’ll do one later in the day, and then when later arrives, the motivation is gone. That’s just a part of life, and it will happen. It’s important to find ways to bring back that motivation!
Get Deeper On Your Why
Many people say they get into flipping to make extra money, but you need to go deeper. Pretty much everyone wants extra income. Why is that? What will it allow you to do? Will it let you pay off a credit card so you can relax easier? Debt is a huge thing that can be crushing and stressful. Is it something else? Do you just have enough to survive, but you want to go to the next level to do stuff for your family?
Think about what that deep why is for you. It’s sometimes seven questions deep before you get to that why. Once you find it, hold onto it.
Our why for getting into flipping full-time was our kids. Melissa was working as a trainer with baby number three on the way, and that’s when we decided to take our side hustle to the next level. We didn’t want to put our kids in daycare. We wanted to allow Melissa to stay home but knew we had to up the income. At that point, I’d been flipping for 15-20 years, so we just had to figure out how to make more money, which drove us into large items.
Again, this comes back to knowing your why. Is it about paying off debt? Is it about quitting your full-time job? Once you hone into that, you’ll find more motivation to keep going, and you can constantly revisit that why.
Motivate Yourself With Visuals
If you are a visual person, consider posting your why somewhere you can see it regularly. Make it a thermometer chart where you can see you’re chunking away at a goal and marking it off as you go.
Extra vacations are a goal for us. For us, we want to be able to do stuff with our kids. We take the kids out of school every birthday and make a whole day out of it with Chuck E Cheese, games, and other things to make it a day of celebration. We couldn’t do that if we were working 9 to 5 jobs. That’s what motivates us, our kids, and doing things with them. What motivates you?
