What If You Buy Something To Resell & It Doesn’t Work?

What If It Doesn't Work?

Thank you so much for spending your time with us! We would be so grateful if you could take a minute and leave us a review.

What happens when you buy something expecting it to work, but it doesn’t? Let’s talk about what happens if you purchase something to resell and you think it works, but then you get it home, test it, and learn it does not work.

This is a comment we see a lot because we sell a lot of appliances. When you go to buy it are you trusting the seller’s word? And do they work? What happens if they don’t?

Nine times out of 10 if a seller tells you it works, it will work. We sell a lot of appliances and we usually get them from people who are updating their kitchens or getting rid of stuff they had. If something doesn’t work, they’ll usually tell you one burner doesn’t work on this cooktop or it’s missing a knob so you know ahead of time.

What If It Doesn't Work?

What To Do When It Doesn’t Work

There is that 1% of times where something doesn’t work. This happened recently on our road trip. We picked up a commercial dishwasher along with some other items a guy had. It was a conveyor washer that had racks and ran dishes through it. It was made to do a lot of dishes. I asked if it worked and he said everything else he got from the auction had worked and nobody had come back to say anything negative. I assumed it worked and purchased it. When I got it to Michigan where Melissa’s uncle was able to test it at an industrial warehouse, we pulled the top off and realized it was missing two main components which were very expensive.

I don’t think the guy purposely misled me but at the same time it didn’t work. I had paid $500 for this expecting to make $10,000 because when purchased new, the machines are $35,000 to $40,000.

Sell For Parts Or As Is

What are my options for the dishwasher when it doesn’t work? My options are to sell it for parts or sell it as is.

The number one rule with appliances is to make sure you’re getting such a great deal on the item that if things do go south you still have a way to make your money back. You never want to lose out on your buys. You wouldn’t want to pay $200 for an item that sells for $500. You should be paying $50 for an item and selling it for $500. Then even if you have to sell the parts, you can probably sell it for at least $50 worth of parts to make your money back.

I can still sell the dishwasher parts for a couple thousand dollars because I was able to test the rest of the components. When you’re unable to test an item you can sell it as untested for parts. You can’t sell it for used because you don’t know it works. People do still buy untested items. I usually give them all the info I know about it when selling it for parts. You can’t get top dollar, but you can still make some money.

Make sure you list it right on eBay as for parts or repair though, so somebody can’t come back and say it wasn’t working. If you get items at a good price though, you can usually make your money back even if it doesn’t work.

Robert Stephenson

I grew up in Central Florida and have lived here my whole life. I first got into buying and selling items when I was 16 years old, and have been hooked ever since. It has mostly been a hobby that makes some extra cash, but sometimes it serves as my main income as well. I don't plan on stopping any time soon. I find too many fun toys for my family (or myself), and just love the whole process.
