What can you do if your local thrift stores don’t have good items for you to buy and resell in your flipping business?
We get this comment every once in a while on our videos or social media. Just recently we posted a video of something we found at a thrift store during our summer road trip and somebody commented, “The thrift stores around me aren’t like that.” Today, we’re tackling what you can do if your thrift stores don’t have good items.
Look For Good Items Elsewhere
The first tip is, don’t just rely on the thrift stores. You might not have good items, or you can’t find good items in one of the thrift stores or multiple thrift stores in your area. Broaden your horizon and start looking in other places to find those cool items that you can turn around and flip.
Check out flea markets, yard sales, and even the apps. We use the apps like Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, and Craigslist too. Don’t limit yourself to sourcing only at thrift stores. Do a Google search on flea markets in your area and try to just broaden your horizon of where else can you find these really, really good items to turn around and flip.
Drive Outside Of Your Area
On our roadtrip, we checked out thrift stores we don’t normally visit. You don’t have to take a road trip across the country, but you might have to drive a little bit to a thrift stores in the next town over to find something.
If the thrift stores in your area are horrible, then maybe just once a week or once a month to go travel an hour away to a different area or a bigger city. Make a day of it, and go to a couple thrift stores. Check out yard sales along the way.
You can also check out what’s selling on the apps in those areas prior to heading that way, and you might even be able to pick up some extra items that way.
Don’t Get Overwhelmed At Thrift Stores
Another obstacle that sometimes prevents people from finding items at thrift stores is they get overwhelmed with all the items.
We tend to gravitate towards certain items because we’ve sold them before and now we know about what they’re worth and we know if the value is there. We can hone in on that. It might be helpful to take a step back, narrow your niche down, and find two to three categories of items to focus on. You will likely find more of the item if you’re focusing only on them and not getting overwhelmed looking up every single item.
Reframe Your Mindset
When we talk about this, we think about one of our coaches, Joanna. When she was first flipping, she was looking for items and struggling to find them and thought the items just weren’t there. She lived near one of our other coaches, Stacy, who was finding items all the time. Joanna wondered why she couldn’t find the amazing items that Stacy was picking up, so she reframed her mindset. She decided to not use it as an excuse, and changed up her strategy. She visited thrift stores at different days and times and then she started finding the quality items she was looking for.
Some of it can be mindset. Don’t give up if you don’t find an item worth flipping at your local thrift store. Change your game plan, change your mindset, and keep working on it.
