We recently turned $100 into $500 without using eBay and it was just with one single flip. We’ll dive into how we made that flip without using eBay and why we didn’t do our normal 10x on profit.
Where To Sell Without Using eBay
This sale was made without eBay fees and without shipping costs; we sold it on Facebook Marketplace. If you’re going to do a local sale, other apps you can use are Craigslist or OfferUp. We decided to sell this item locally because we just wanted it gone.
The item was a ticket booth. Down here in Florida on the beaches, there’s a little booth so people can pay to drive their cars onto the beach. This was a toll booth, just a little glass enclosed room, approximately six feet by three feet and eight feet tall. We bought it for $100 and it had a piece of glass broken out of the side. I had plans to fix the glass, add an air conditioning unit, fix it up, and sell it for 20x what we invested.
The booth sat in my storage yard for two years and I never got around to the project. Recently I started working through my piles of items because they were just sitting there and we can make some money on them.
Wait For The Right Buyer
I snapped some pictures of the booth in the back of the lot, posted them, and immediately had tons of people reaching out. A lot of people were asking for me to take $150 or $350, and I wasn’t to the point where I was going to do that. I left it at $500 and eventually someone came and paid full price for it. Just because people send you offers does not mean you have to accept them.
I figured if I would have fixed it, put in the air conditioner I had, painted it and cleaned it up, I could’ve sold it for between $2,500 and $5,000, but sometimes it’s just nice to liquidate and get rid of some stuff that’s sitting around. If you’re not motivated to fix it, just get rid of it. I didn’t lose a penny on this and we still made 5x our initial investment.
The lady who bought it actually reached back out and said she wanted anything else that we found that was similar because she was in the security business. By waiting for the right buyer, we have someone who really wanted the item and will possibly give us repeat business if we ever have something similar to sell.
Reduce Projects
Right now where we’re at in our business, more projects are not worth it. Projects have potential, but for a lot of us, they just end up junking up the garage or storage unit because we’re too busy to get them finished. If you’re finding you’re not motivated to do the projects, don’t take on more. Liquidate the project items you have and sell them as is or for parts. It’s okay to let an item go for a low profit or at cost and find other items to make profits on. There are plenty of other great items to find!
