I Listed 1 Item On eBay And It’s Not, Is It Time To Throw In The Towel?

Thank you so much for spending your time with us! We would be so grateful if you could take a minute and leave us a review.

If you’ve listed an item on eBay and it’s not selling, should you throw in the towel?

This is something we hear about a lot in our community and we get asked the question because people new to flipping will list an item or two and they won’t sell. Then they get frustrated and want to quit because it’s not working. Let’s unpack that and talk about what you should do instead of throwing in the towel.

Set Realistic Expectations

Set your expectations the right way. If you get one item listed and then you’re expecting it to sell the next day, it doesn’t always happen that way. We’ve had items sell in 12 hours and 24 hours, but that is not the norm. When you are just getting started on eBay, your items will not fly off the shelf, and even if you’re established, it may take a while to get your item in front of the right buyer. It could sit on the shelf for weeks before it sells.

List Consistently

When you’re starting out, you might list 10 things, but you don’t want to stop listing after that. The algorithm likes the daily listing and they want you on their platform. If you can get something listed every day, then your other stuff will start selling.

One thing that eBay loves that the algorithms will favor, is getting one thing listed.

We do high profit items, but one thing you can do when you’re starting out with these high-dollar items is also list low-profit items to get the algorithm working in your favor.

If I get a slow week where, or you know, two weeks, whatever it is, I can start listing daily and maybe I’ll list a couple items that might be a hundred dollars just to keep active on eBay. You might add in some $10 or $20 items just to stay active and to have something to list every day. Then you throw in some more expensive items in there, $500, $300, and the algorithms will totally favor that. And then you will start to see sales coming in more and more as you are more active on the platform.

Increase Your Feedback

The more listings you have, the more feedback you will get. Feedback also plays into the algorithm. Buyers also like to see you are an established seller with a good track record, so make sure you are asking for feedback on the sales you complete. You can also build feedback by shopping on eBay and getting feedback as a buyer.  Feedback is probably one of the most important things on eBay.

One of our recent coaching students was listing and not seeing sales so she started 14 days of straight listing and the sales started coming in and she’s new to eBay. She’s still building her feedback and her business. The last couple months she’s made around $4,500 reselling and listing consistently.

Keep Your Account In Good Standing

Make sure you keep your eBay account in good standing. If you say you’re going to ship in two days, ship in two days. You’ll get dinged if you are constantly shipping late or you are having to pull items you can’t find.

You have to get the algorithms to favor you by being active on the platform, being consistent, shipping on time, and getting good feedback.

Don’t get frustrated if an item isn’t moving yet. List other items and keep working on it.

eBay Is Dead, Or Is It?

How And Why We’ve Only Had 1 Return In 2 Years

Robert Stephenson

I grew up in Central Florida and have lived here my whole life. I first got into buying and selling items when I was 16 years old, and have been hooked ever since. It has mostly been a hobby that makes some extra cash, but sometimes it serves as my main income as well. I don't plan on stopping any time soon. I find too many fun toys for my family (or myself), and just love the whole process.
