We’ve made over $20,000 in the last two years just by selling free items, so we’re going to share how you can find free items to sell in your flipping business.
One of the top three reasons why your flipping business might not be profitable is if you’re spending too much on inventory. One way to get around that is by looking for free items. Our goal is to 10x our investment on an item to maximize profit. You can easily do that by reselling free items.
Find Free Items In The Trash
We are not talking about dumpster diving when we say to look in the trash. We don’t dumpster dive, but people throw stuff away all the time.
We live in a downtown area and go walking or running regularly down the trail to the downtown. Along the way we often see things that people set out in the trash. We have made tens of thousands of dollars in the last nine years by picking stuff from the side of the road. This is built into our regular routine.
Some practical ways that you could apply this would be to find out what day your large item trash day is, and check out your neighborhoods the night before. And just because it’s a large trash day doesn’t mean all the items are large. I’ve found battery chargers, speakers, furniture and more.
Just make a trip around your local neighborhood or go into another neighborhood and see what you can find on the side of the road.
We found an exercise bike that goes under a standup desk for free and sold it for $300.
Find Free Items On The Apps
Scroll through Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, or Craigslist and look in their free section and look for stuff that’s listed for free. Free items tend to go fast so you have to be able to pick them up quickly.
One great example was a chiropractic chair I found on OfferUp. I messaged the guy to ask if he’d take $350 for it and I didn’t hear back from him. A week later he said I could have it for free if I could get it immediately because he had a new table coming the next day. We arranged for me to pick it up the next morning before the new table arrived and I made $2,300 off that sale.
You can set alerts on some of the apps for “curb alert” or “free” so you can get notified when these items pop up in the app.
Find Free Items From Friends
The last way to find free items is to tell your friends what you do. When Melissa was a personal trainer, she told clients what we did and sometimes they would give us items. One client was a property manager and she would call us to pick up stuff that was left behind. We got two metal frame princess beds for free and made $550 off them.
Another friend gave me a humidor for free that we sold for $1,000.
Our friends know what we do to make a living and sometimes they just don’t want to deal with selling an item themselves. Once your item sells, consider giving your friend a small gift card to their favorite restaurant or something to show your appreciation.
In our next part of the series we’ll show you how to take your reselling business to the next level. Our whole thing is high profit flips, so we want to show you how we do that.
