$32K Found On Our Summer Road Trip

road trip

Thank you so much for spending your time with us! We would be so grateful if you could take a minute and leave us a review.

We are back from six weeks on the road with over $30,000 in inventory ready to get posted to eBay!

Every summer we like to take a family road trip that also gives us an opportunity to source in new areas for items to resell when we get back.

This is our third year doing it, and it all started when we were doing the 127 Yard Sale, the world’s longest yard sale that is 690 miles of yard sale from Alabama to Michigan. It’s four days long and you can find a lot of great items to resell. From there we grew it into an annual family road trip that gives us a chance to explore state and national parks with our kids, visit family and friends, and source in different places.

This year we hit 19 states, traveled over 10,000 miles, and picked up 17 items worth almost $32,000.

How To Source On The Road

We found items in all different places. We found them in thrift stores, on Facebook Marketplace, Offerup, and Craigslist. The trailer we pulled was a 14-foot v-nose enclosed trailer and by the end of the trip it was filled up.

A lot of times you can find great deals in small areas. So how did we do it?

The night before heading to our next destination I would start looking up the zipcode in Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, and Craigslist to see what we might want to buy and if we could get a meetup scheduled. A lot of times we’re only in town for 24 to 48 hours so it can be challenging to get something scheduled all through messaging or if it’s on a weekday when the other person is working. There’s quite a few things I tried to set up but didn’t get a message back on, so we missed it because we had to be back on the road, but we did find some treasures along the way!

Are you curious to know what we picked up to make over $30,000? Let’s dive in!

ITEM #1 – 36-inch Downdraft Popup Hood

This one sits behind a cooktop and you press a button and it sucks the air below the cooktop to the exhaust pipe that you hook up to it. We picked this up for $30 and should be able to sell it for $1,000.

ITEM #2 – Thermador Kitchen Set

We picked this one up at a thrift store in Colorado and bought a whole set. It’s a white glass set and has a 36-inch gas cooktop, and a 36-inch warming drawer that goes underneath the cookup. Really, really cool set! We paid $200 and should get around $3,000 for the set.

ITEM #3 – 45-inch Jenn-Air Cooktop

This 45-inch cooktop is glass and has a downdraft. It’s similar a pop-up vent except this one’s built into the cooktop. We paid $65 and should get $1,800.

ITEM #4 & #5– Two Warming Drawers

These were two awesome finds at the same thrift store we bought the Thermador kitchen set from. They were $5 each and should sell for $250 a piece. These are also Thermador warming drawers but were only 30-inches versus the 36-inch that was in the set.

ITEM #6 – NordicTrack Achiever

Picked this one up while we were in Phoenix speaking at a conference (more to come on the conference soon). While there I jumped on my phone and found someone giving this away for free so we set up a meetup and I tried to give him some money but he didn’t want it. This was free and should bring in $300 to $350.

ITEM #7 – Easy Stand

Another thrift store find from Colorado. It’s a unit that straps kids in and helps them lay down, sit up, and things like that. We paid $35 and it should sell for $1,500.

ITEM #8 – Miscellaneous Pipes

These pipes were a thrift store find too. This was from a huge thrift store that had a lot of stuff. We actually went a few times because it was by Melissa’s mom’s house. Someone had donated these galvanized gas pipe fittings. We paid $20 total for them and they should sell for roughly $200.

ITEM #9 – The RV Satellite

The RV satellite is portable and easy to use, and was another thrift store find. We paid $10 and it should sell for about $180.

ITEM #10 – The Honeywell Cell

We snagged these at a thrift store too. It’s a purifying cell. We paid $10 and they should sell for $130 as a set.

ITEM #11 – Electric Panel

This is a breaker that you put on the side of your house to connect a generator to it. We paid $15 and it should go for $650. The lowest comp that was listed was $750.

ITEM #12 – The Soloflex

We found a Soloflex exercise machine when we were in Boise, Idaho. It was a freebie too. Someone had a yard sale but they couldn’t sell it so they threw it online for free. I’ll probably part this out and sell it to make $400 or $500. Not bad for a free item.

ITEM #13 – The Oven

While we were in Boise we also picked up a Jenn-Air oven with a downdraft. I went there expecting to pay $125 but when I got there the person couldn’t find the actual downdraft motor so they didn’t want to sell it to us without it. I said can I give you $60 and if you find the other part I’ll come back and pay another $65, so he gave it to us for $60. I will have to get a downdraft motor which is available on eBay for $70-$100 and then I should be able to sell it for around $2,000.

ITEM #14 & #15 – The Oven And Cooktop

We got a Jenn-Air 45-inch cooktop and a stainless steel double oven. This cooktop is gas and different in design. It slides into the spot, is more expensive and more desirable. We paid $100 for each item. We did have to uninstall them because it was in a house that was getting demolished, so I brought my tools and Melissa and I got them out. We should be able to sell them for $2,500 each.

ITEM #16 & #17 – The TurboChefs

These were the items that moved the needle on our inventory total. I was excited about these when I found these late one night after we stopped driving. The seller was asking $1,000 for one. I offered him $500 for one. He didn’t get back to me and we had to take off for Boise. While there he messaged me and said he had two other ones. I asked if he’d do two for $800 because that was all the cash I had and he said yes. So we met up and got these commercial kitchen cookers. They retail for $13,000-$15,000 new and they should sell for $7,500 to $8,000 a piece. This was a very great find!

We ended up spending $1,455 total for all the items and our estimation on what we should get in sales is $31,760. It was a great road trip — family fun and great finds!

Robert Stephenson

I grew up in Central Florida and have lived here my whole life. I first got into buying and selling items when I was 16 years old, and have been hooked ever since. It has mostly been a hobby that makes some extra cash, but sometimes it serves as my main income as well. I don't plan on stopping any time soon. I find too many fun toys for my family (or myself), and just love the whole process.
