When we are sourcing and reselling items, we could do it by ourselves, or we can involve our family. It’s a family business for us.
We choose to involve our family in most of the parts of flipping, including making their own money.
It’s one of the reasons we love flipping so much. We have more family time and we can involve our kids in the family business.
The kids are with us at thrift stores and flea markets, they come on pick-ups and hang out and help when we pallett big items.
This past year, we started teaching them more about flipping their own items, and they love making their own money.
They pick the items they want to sell. They clean the items up, take pictures, and package them up.
What better way to spend your time with your family and make money to pay your bills, have spending money, pay off debt or whatever else you wish to do with it.
Sourcing
With a little teaching, kids have a great eye for what sells. We take our kids sourcing all the time. They pick their items and we pick ours.
Yard sales, flea markets, and thrift stores, are perfect places to bring your family and find items to sell for your business.
Many Sundays of the year, we go to multiple flea markets. The kids look forward to it, and we do too.
In the evenings, I wind down by sourcing on local online apps for items to buy to sell.
Cleaning
A huge part of selling used items is cleaning them.
Yes, I know cleaning can be no fun, but it can be the difference between selling and not selling.
It can also be the difference between a good profit and an okay profit.
Cleaning items is another great example of a family activity. You can even make it fun.
If you want, you can even help your kids earn a little extra money by putting in some elbow grease.
Picking Up Items
When you source items on local platforms like Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, or
Craigslist, you have to meet the person to pick up your items.
We often pick up items as a family. It is another way to spend time together while you are working.
Sometimes, when we are running a bunch of errands and are picking up several items, we will stop for ice cream on the way home.
It’s our way of giving them a little treat, and it’s fun and delicious.
Listing
Listing is absolutely the most important thing to making money selling used items.
If you don’t list your item, it cannot sell.
I totally love the thrill of the hunt. Yes, sourcing is my forte.
Listing is not my favorite part of flipping, but I do realize how important it is.
I do wish I could just source items all day every day, but if I don’t list items, we won’t make the money.
I list most of my own items. Sometimes Melissa will list her items or help me. The perk of listing is that I can still hang out with my kids and get items listed.
I have said this many times before, we love flipping because we can involve our family and have way more family time than when we were working a 40 hour a week job.
The freedom of our schedule is what makes me the happiest.
Don’t get me wrong, we work hard to make it all happen. But, we also play hard too.
We balance a lot of balls in the air at once, but the time we have as a family makes it all worth it.
Shipping
Melissa and I have packaged and shipped a ton of items of all sizes.
Last year we started teaching the kids all about flipping, including packaging and shipping.
Our son is the youngest and he absolutely loves to drop packages off at the post office.
At 5 years old, he thinks he is big stuff when he gets to help with many different parts of flipping, but I think one of his favorite parts besides making money is taking our packages to the post office.
Watching my parents buy used items and sell them is what got me started selling things on my own.
That experience as a child has done me well over the years and my hope is to give our kids business skills and ways to make their own money.
