How To Use Social Media In Your Flipping Business: Interview With eBay For Business Podcast

Thank you so much for spending your time with us! We would be so grateful if you could take a minute and leave us a review.

We did an interview with the eBay For Business podcast a while back and it’s actually the interview that sparked us getting started with our own podcast. It was cool to be able to sit and talk with people in eBay so we wanted to share the interview we had with Griff.

How Long Have You Been Doing This?

I started doing this 25 years ago and the social media aspect of our business started around 6 years ago. I started this when I was 16. My mom modeled it for me, going to yard sales and picking up stuff and then selling it for more money.

What Else Did You Do Before You Jumped In Full-Time?

I have done everything. I was a host at Red Lobster, worked for a glass company, started multiple businesses include an advertising company, tried to do parasailing, pool cleaning, landscaping and even painting. You name it, I probably have done it or tried to start a business in it.

What Did Melissa Do Before eBay And Social Media?

Melissa rode horses at a dinner show called Arabian Nights and was a personal trainer for ten years.

Why Did You Start The Social Part Of Your Business?

We decided to go full time with our reselling business and we decided that we wanted to teach others how to do what we do.

How Did The First Couple Of Months Go?

It was horrible. The eBay business was going well. We were able to make $42,000 a year part-time and when we jumped to full time, we went up to $130,000 in revenue. The teaching aspect and using social media was what was tough. We created a course and we thought everything would just boom and people would flock to us.

The problem was we didn’t have any exposure from social media because we had never really published or showed off the kind of stuff we were flipping. We gave up on teaching after seven months. We took about a half a year off and then decided to give it a try again.

What Did You Do Differently On Social Media?

We went into it with some false expectations at first. We came back regrouped and revamped our content strategy. Focusing on being consistent helped. It still took time, but we got better at focusing on what helped people or got attention.

Our flips are very, very weird. They’re different. It was one of those things that we realized, okay, we have to start showing some people some of these flips so they can see what we do and how much fun we have. That’s where we started to embrace it. And it’s just gotten better ever since then.

Can You Share A Memorable Flip?

We purchased a bus wash on a road trip. It took us one year to sell this bus wash. It’s 11 foot tall, 7 foot wide, 6 foot deep. It’s a big mobile bus wash that you walk around a bus and you wash a bus with it. We paid $500 for it. And then we sold it a year later for $14,500.

Does It Become Harder To Find Big Flips?

The biggest thing is most people won’t ship them on a pallet. It takes time to sell and time to package and ship. That’s what usually sets us apart from other resellers.

They won’t go the extra mile to throw it on a pallet, strap it down, and then ship it to another state. That’s kind of where we stand out. We can make so much more money by listing it on eBay.

How Much Time Does Social Media Take Up?

I would say of our working day, 75% of it is working on social media, blog courses, all that stuff and the other 25% is actual flipping.

Do You Schedule Social Media In Advance?

We’re able to schedule some things in advance, but we never know what we’re going to see when we’re out sourcing. A lot of our videos are impromptu.

We do short videos and have been doing a lot of TikToks and Reels. Those are pretty easy and quick to do.

How Did Your Social Media Audience Grow?

We started mostly with blogs and Pinterest. We did blog posts and videos. YouTube is still on our radar.

What Advice Do You Have To Share?

Be consistent on whatever social media you choose. Understand the problems people are having so you can answer them. Set boundaries when it comes to social media. Turn off the notifications so you can still have time to enjoy life. Just don’t turn off the eBay sale notifications!

Robert Stephenson

I grew up in Central Florida and have lived here my whole life. I first got into buying and selling items when I was 16 years old, and have been hooked ever since. It has mostly been a hobby that makes some extra cash, but sometimes it serves as my main income as well. I don't plan on stopping any time soon. I find too many fun toys for my family (or myself), and just love the whole process.
