Thank you so much for spending your time with us! We would be so grateful if you could take a minute and leave us a review.
We’ve been reflecting on our business lately, and today I’m going to talk about the one piece of advice that moved the needle for us. As most of you know we’ve been working to grow our flipping business full-time for the last five or six years.
We think this piece of advice can work for resellers or entrepreneurs in any industry.
Entrepreneurs Have Ideas
Just like a lot of visionaries and entrepreneurs, I’ve had a lot of ideas over the years. But getting them to come to fruition is often harder than the idea itself.
I’ve done lawn care and pool maintenance. I almost started a lake tour business, tried to get a roofing license, thought about an advertising business, and even tried parasailing to see if it could be a business.
The parasailing was before I met Melissa. My friends and I had picked up a parasail at a yard sale and went to test it out. It didn’t come with a rope so we picked one up. I was going to be the one on the parasail and we didn’t realize the parasail has an upside and a downside. If you don’t have the upside up it doesn’t pick up and pull you into the air, so during our test run it flipped me over and backwards. It was actually a blessing that happened because the rope that we bought for the clip was the wrong kind and it came unclipped, popped all the way up 500 feet, and hit me in the back of the head. I floated down to the water and my friends pulled me out; luckily I was okay aside from a gash on my head. Another reason to wear a life jacket! Needless to say, that did not become a business.
Eventually, I ended up going back to flipping. We’ve been working on it for the last six years now after getting some advice from my brother-in-law, who passed away two years ago. He was a very successful business owner who I looked up to, and we had a great relationship.
One day he said, “Listen, you’re very smart. You have great ideas. All you have to do is stick to it. If you stick to one of those ideas, doesn’t matter what it is, pool cleaning, landscaping. It doesn’t matter what it is. If you just stick to it, stick it out, you will be successful because that is who you are.”
This was THE one piece of advice that changed everything.
Entrepreneurs will always have ideas, but it’s about picking one and sticking to it.
Define Your Success
Success can be defined by many different things to many different people.
Six years into this business, I consider us successful at what we do. We love what we do. We spend time together and we have a great time with our kids.
We get to be our own bosses, make our own schedules, and take the random weekday off to celebrate our kid’s birthday. For us being successful is about being able to create memories with our kids.
And this business has allowed us to do that. Sometimes we’ll work at odd hours to make up for time during the day with the kids. Just a few nights ago I created a pallet and worked until 12:30 at night, then packed it up on the trailer and took it to the freight company. I don’t want to be doing that in the middle of the night, but we made choices that week to spend time doing other things so it’s what I had to do. And this business gives me the freedom to make those choices.
Stick To It
We started our Flea Market Flipper blog in 2015 and did it for six months and then quit because we didn’t have enough traffic. But six months later we picked it up again, decided to stick with it, and now we’re able to use our platform as a way to help others make extra money to support their families.
We’ve touched thousands of people’s lives. We’ve shown them how to make a living flipping, we’ve shown them how to do side hustles and all that kind of stuff. We wouldn’t have been able to do that had we given up, so that’s our piece of advice.
If you just stick with it, you’ll find success. Most people give up way, way too quickly their dreams. It does get hard sometimes, and it’s not easy to stick to things, but imagine what can happen if you do.
Diverse streams of income are great, and that’s what our flipping side hustle was for a long time, one of those streams. But maybe try focusing on one and really give it the time it deserves to grow.
We recently listened to the book “The One Thing” that has you thinking about the one thing you want to do and what you’re going to do during your day to get there. Try to align your daily activities with that one goal.
Find An Accountability Partner
It may help to find an accountability partner. It doesn’t have to be your spouse, but it certainly can be. If not, join a mastermind or look for groups where people are on the same mission as you with their goals. Set goals and hold each other accountable to hit them.
John Lee Dumas says FOCUS, follow one course until success. That’s what we have tried to do in our business.
