The 1 Thing That Helps Me Bust Through Limiting Beliefs

The 1 Thing That Helps Me Bust Through Limiting Beliefs

Thank you so much for spending your time with us! We would be so grateful if you could take a minute and leave us a review.

What you think about yourself and your business matters, so pushing through limiting beliefs is important.

Limiting beliefs can stop your business from being as successful as it could be, so today, we’re going to talk about mindset and how it can help you crush your reselling goals.

Overcoming Our Limiting Belief

Six years ago, when Melissa and I went full-time into this business, we knew Melissa was giving up her job. I was giving up my job, and we would flip full-time. We ended up gravitating toward larger items because they were higher profit. Typically you could find a larger item in a local area, buy it, and then it would have a higher resale value. We didn’t resell large items on eBay because it seemed too difficult, so instead, we just sold locally. This was our first limiting belief.

At that time, we bought a furniture set from an auction we were trying to sell. The purchase included a huge dining room table with a matching buffet and eight or ten chairs. I bought it for $350 and listed it on Facebook Marketplace because that’s always where we would list larger items. It was listed for $750 for two months but didn’t budge.

I’ve been in the reselling business for over 25 years, and I was selling on eBay, but at this time, I hadn’t sold large items on eBay. So I thought about looking on eBay to see what it would make. The dining sets on eBay were selling for $3,000-$5,000, so I told Melissa we’ll make money on this set if we could figure out how to ship it.

I took nice pictures because you need better photos on eBay, and I ended up selling it in a month for $2,200 plus $500 for shipping.

The 1 Thing That Helps Me Bust Through Limiting Beliefs

Figuring Out Freight Shipping

Once it sold, I got it palleted and figured out how to do freight shipping. How does this story tie into everything? This story is it. I saw other people were shipping furniture on eBay and saw it as a possibility. All I need is to know one person has done it, and then I can figure it out too. It’s possible. This is an excellent motto because nothing will hold you back. A lot of people will look at something and go, “Okay. They did it well, but I’m not like them.”

I don’t let that hold me back. If somebody else has done it, I will figure out how they did it. I might not get it the first time, and that’s true in this story, too, because I probably didn’t get it shipped nearly as cheap as I could have, but I got better at it.

We sold bigger items, we sold more items, and I got better and better at the whole process to where we’ve honed in the skills on freight shipping to where we can ship it cheaper than anybody else, but it was that one push that I needed knowing somebody else was doing.

This story reminds me of Roger Bannister, the first person to run a 4-minute mile. Before he accomplished his run, nobody had broken a four-minute mile. People didn’t believe it could be done. After he did it, many more people broke that record, some within the first year of his run. One person had to do it before other people decided to train and do it too.

The 1 Thing That Helps Me Bust Through Limiting Beliefs

Challenge Yourself

If you get stuck on something, and it doesn’t have to be about flipping, challenge yourself to find somebody who’s done it and know that it’s been done and you can do it too.

Using that strategy helps me bust through any obstacle I encounter that I’m trying to conquer.

Last year Melissa used this strategy to host our first Reseller Summit. She had never hosted a summit before, but she learned from others and grew during the process. We’re going to have another one this October, so look for more information as we get closer.

It’s normal to have limiting beliefs in whatever you’re working on, but you can do it. You might just have to learn some new skills, but don’t let that be what stops you from growing your business. Bust through those limiting beliefs. You can do it.

Robert Stephenson

I grew up in Central Florida and have lived here my whole life. I first got into buying and selling items when I was 16 years old, and have been hooked ever since. It has mostly been a hobby that makes some extra cash, but sometimes it serves as my main income as well. I don't plan on stopping any time soon. I find too many fun toys for my family (or myself), and just love the whole process.
