Is this Flip Worth It? Let’s Run The Numbers

Thank you so much for spending your time with us! We would be so grateful if you could take a minute and leave us a review.

It is time for another edition of “Is This Flip Worth It?” and we’ll dive into the numbers to answer that question.

This is not a normal item I would’ve purchased, but we recently converted our previous place into an AirBnB. The old house had a need for a carpet cleaner, so I was looking for one. We went to the flea market and found a commercial carpet cleaner. I actually found two with the first vendor I came up to and I asked how much and I think she said $40 but I got her down to $35 a piece, so $70 for both.

I tried to get them for less but once she let us test it out I lost my ability to bargain more. I bundled them together, figuring I’d keep one for our AirBNB and then sell the other to pay for the first one. I’ve seen these in the past and know they were selling anywhere from $350-$500.

After that, we kept walking and I saw another one a couple of aisles over that was a more expensive model with an attachment. I think it would sell for around $800. We negotiated $60 for that one. We’ll keep one and sell the other two.

Looking At The Numbers

If I can sell one of them for $350, I can expect to spend about $65 for shipping. Fees would be around 13%, so $54, which brings the total to $361, but then I have to subtract my $35 cost of goods so it’d be a $326 profit. And that’s on the low end.

The cool thing about these is they don’t have to be on a pallet. They fold down and they will fit into a box.

I think I could get more for the one with the attachment too. I could be in the range of $750-$1,000 profit for these two items. We usually try to go for profits of $1,000 or more, but at the end of the day, we also got a new cleaning item for our own use. I probably wouldn’t have looked at these if this wasn’t something I needed at this stage of my life. That’s something you can consider. Look for high end items in a niche you are familiar with.

If you can bundle stuff together to pay for something you need, that’s a great way to do it.

Robert Stephenson

I grew up in Central Florida and have lived here my whole life. I first got into buying and selling items when I was 16 years old, and have been hooked ever since. It has mostly been a hobby that makes some extra cash, but sometimes it serves as my main income as well. I don't plan on stopping any time soon. I find too many fun toys for my family (or myself), and just love the whole process.
