A reselling business can be set up in many different ways. Donna Kemp is a reseller who is killing it selling clothes on Poshmark. Read on to learn more about how Donna got into reselling and hear some of her tips for those of you just getting started in your reselling business.
How Did You Get Started Reselling?
Donna started reselling in 2019 while planning a trip to Disney World. She realized they needed more money to pay for the trip, so she started finding items for cheap on Facebook Marketplace and flipping them for $30. Then she found momentum and moved on to other items like wagons. When winter rolled around in Michigan, she couldn’t flip strollers or wagons, and she needed a gig because she’d been laid off from her part-time job. She saw an ad for Poshmark, showing a Henri Bendel mug that was being sold for $100. Donna realized she had the same mug and sold hers for that amount of money.
That was the moment that changed her life. She realized she could be a reseller and a stay-at-home mom.
Are You Doing This Part-Time Or Full-Time?
Donna’s business is part-time right now because she homeschools her three kids during the day. She does pieces of the business as she has time throughout the day. Sometimes that means 20 minutes of pictures during the day and then posting in the evening when everyone is asleep.
What Platform Are You Selling On?
For the majority of sales, Donna is using Poshmark. She also uses Mercari, eBay, and Facebook Marketplace.
What Do You Primarily Sell On Poshmark?
Donna focuses on selling clothes. She started with her clothes, and then her sister gave her some expensive clothes, and from there, she’s just grown the business. She says she loves clothes, which is why she gravitates toward them more. It’s fun and energizes her.
Sometimes it can be challenging for Donna to want to sell an item because she loves it so much, but she knows she can use the money to go on vacation or do something else.
Do You Cross-Post Your Items?
Donna’s process is to list on Poshmark first and then crosspost to other platforms with a tool like Vendoo. She says it helps sell her items because each platform has a different audience.
Do You Offer Shipping On Facebook Marketplace?
When selling on Facebook Marketplace, Donna does offer to ship. She said it’s hard to sell to a local audience these days. Since you can ship all over the country for a reasonable price, that’s where everyone can make their money now.
Can You Tell Us About Selling On Whatnot?
Donna just got approved for Whatnot but hasn’t used it yet. Essentially, it’s a live show that allows sellers to set up a time to go live, show the items to their viewers, and sell live on the app.
How Many Items Do You List Per Day Or Week?
Donna lists three to five items daily, and three is the minimum. It adds up to 20 or 30 a week.
What Do You Make On Average Monthly?
Donna’s sales range from $1,800 to $2,500 a month.
Where Do You Source Your Items?
Thrift stores are where Donna primarily finds her items to sell. She tries to find privately-run thrift stores that have better sales. She also has a Goodwill and Salvation Army in her area, but many small thrift stores do charity work.
What Advice Would You Give Someone Starting Out?
Stay consistent and list every day is the number one tip from Donna. She also advises people to get on Instagram and start networking and following other resellers because that’s when she stepped up her business.
Do You Have A Most Memorable Flip?
One flip was a pair of Christian Louboutin shoes on Facebook Marketplace for $50. They were in excellent condition, and she flipped them for $350. She also flipped a brand new toilet seat which was weird but memorable.
Are You Worried About Selling Knockoffs?
Donna is cautious with name brands and does the research before selling because you can get into trouble if you sell a knockoff. She says the more you learn about brands, the easier it gets.
Where Do You See Your Reselling Business In The Future?
Donna’s biggest goal is to get into Amazon FBA because there’s a lot of money to make.
