Today we’re going to talk about the flip of the week. We sold one item for $7,500! Let’s dive into the shipping cost, eBay fees, and of course, the profits.
This flip is incredible because we took something from the trash and turned it into money. This may be the flip of the year for us.
Look For Items Everywhere
This flip is the result of being observant. I was at my kids’ school a couple of months ago and looked at the dumpsters and saw a couple of floor machines used to clean gymnasium floors. The third was a machine that you stood on and lifted to eight feet so you could work on ceilings, change out lights, do installs, and perform other tasks.
I picked the kids up, swung the car around, ran inside, and asked if they were trash and if I could take them. They said absolutely. So 45 minutes later, I headed back with the trailer and Melissa to load them up.
It was an event. The first two loaded up easily, but we couldn’t figure out how to get the safety lock off the third one, which was about 700 or 800 pounds, so getting it onto the trailer was an ordeal. We eventually got it onto the trailer, and that’s when we found where the safety lock was. It took us like 45 minutes to move this thing, but I knew it would be worth it.
It’s called a Crown Wave. We did have to replace four batteries for it and a wheel, but that was only about $600 that we invested into it.
Sales: $7,500
Fees: $202
Promoted listing fees: $242
Insertion fees: $40
Parts (batteries and wheel): $600
Shipping: $576
Cogs: $0
Profit: $5,840
You might be wondering, how did we sell so cheap on eBay? Fees are usually 13% for final value fees, but this item was in a different category that I had no idea about. I called eBay to ask them about that. Because we were shipping this, I wanted to make sure that when the buyer received it, there was no way for them to come back and say, ” Hey, this is not as described.” They told me to put it in an industrial or commercial category where I had to pay a $20 insertion fee per month. This was up for a few months, costing $40 for two months. But it put me into a category that the buyers cannot claim, not as described.
Shipping was a little high, but that’s because it’s a big freight shipment that went all the way from Florida to California. It’s still an outstanding profit for a free item that we got something out of the trash. I love these kinds of high-profit flips.
This was an item worth grabbing; if we’d made half what we did, it would’ve been worth it. I haven’t even listed the other two machines yet, so we’ll see what we get for those!
I had this listed locally the whole time it was listed on eBay, but I have yet to hear back from anyone. That shows you that offering freight shipping increases your sales pool.
