Should you worry about tariffs in your eBay business?
If you’re based in the United States, you might be stressed out about tariffs. We are not political, so we are leaving politics out of it and just talking about how we think tariffs will impact resellers.
We’ve done some research on how this can affect our reselling business and overall, we’re not worried about it.
Tariffs are on imports and exports. Tariff prices may cause the sellers of a good to have to go up in prices if they source outside of their country. If you’re sourcing within the U.S. and you are based in the U.S., then you’re not going to have to pay a tariff on an item. We sell high profit items, buy in the local market, and sell to a nationwide market, so we don’t expect this to impact our reselling business.
How Tariffs Might Impact Resellers
We recently did a search on this and if you’re focused on sourcing used items secondhand, these items have already passed through the original supply chain, meaning they’re not subject to new import tariffs. They don’t apply to resold or used items, especially in the peer to peer resale economy. This is why we believe it will not affect our business directly as far as sales.
Resellers might be able to sell their items faster and for a better price if people are not able to buy new items directly from manufacturers. There may be shipping delays as new costs go into effect and it could cause a backup for inventory. That’s where resellers who find an item in the local market can list it on eBay and sell it elsewhere in the U.S. for a good price.
We are not talking about price gouging, but the resale value of some items may go up. There could also be delays with shipping. When there were backups during COVID, those impacted our freight shipments. eBay’s statement on tariffs said if there are shipping delays overseas because of tariffs and that leads to bad feedback, that eBay would make sure it gets removed.
We think there’s never been a better time to be a flipper. Taking items from a local market to the national market can be a really smart way to get sales because people don’t want to pay tariffs on new items.
