Reselling, Selling On Whatnot & FlipCon: Interview W/Hairy Tornado

How To Resell On Whatnot: Interview W/Hairy Tornado

Thank you so much for spending your time with us! We would be so grateful if you could take a minute and leave us a review.

Let’s talk about Whatnot, the social marketplace that helps resellers connect with buyers via live video auctions. Josh and his wife, of Hairy Tornado, are full-time YouTubers and resellers showing you how to make money by finding and flipping items on Whatnot and other reselling platforms.

How Did You Get Into Reselling?

Josh says he got into reselling because he needed money. He started watching YouTube videos and learning how to do it. At the same time he was already making YouTube videos about non-reselling topics. As Josh’s interest in reselling grew, he started making YouTube videos about flipping and it’s something he does full-time now. He sold his first item on eBay in the fall of 2018 and started making reselling YouTube videos in February 2019.

Have You Always Been Interested In YouTube?

Josh says YouTube got really big when he was in high school so he’s always been interested in it, but he thought the idea of being a YouTuber was far-fetched. He never thought it was doable, but he still jumped in, and is now doing it full-time.

What Is Your Main Reselling Platform?

Josh’s main reselling platform is Whatnot. They’ve been doing that for about a year and a half and it’s been great. They don’t have to list as many items on eBay because they’re able to sell them on Whatnot with live auctions, which makes it easy to sell the $5, $10, $15 items.

Can You Tell Us More About Whatnot?

To sell on Whatnot you have to apply to be a seller. They want to make sure you have an idea of what you are doing. Once you’re accepted you can do live auctions or even do buy it now sales, listing your item for sale with a set price, similar to eBay.

What Items Are You Selling?

Josh says he is an everything seller. He’s done golf clubs and shoes. If he sees something worth $100 and he’s never sold it before, he’ll figure it out. On his last show he did Hot Wheels, Funko Pops, golf clubs, clothes, shoes, video games, and jewelry.

How Do You Keep Track Of It All?

Josh says he hired an independent contractor who helps set up all of the Whatnot auctions and she ships everything. That allows Josh and his wife to focus on the YouTube side of the business.

Before a show, they take one picture of the item so the customer has a good reference of what it is. When you do the show is when you showcase the item, show details and flaws, and put the weight in so Whatnot knows what to charge the buyer for shipping. It takes about 45 minutes to get everything listed for the show. Josh says it would take a lot longer to list the same amount of items on eBay, so he likes the live shows on Whatnot.

How Many Shows Do You Do?

Josh does about two to three shows a week and gets 200 to 300 people in a show. People ask questions in the chat and bid on items. Whatnot makes the bidding a streamlined process.

Are You Still Selling On eBay?

Josh still sells on eBay, and his 90-day total is around $12,000. He lists items that are worth more than $50 on eBay. Anything less than that goes on Whatnot.

Tell Us About Your House Renovation Project?

Josh and his wife bought a house for $155,000 and they are working on renovating it. They decided to create a YouTube series about the process and are trying to renovate it for $20 out of pocket. They took $20 to the Goodwill bins, turned it into $250 by flipping, and kept that going. They used the first $400 or $500 to rent the dumpster and he and his wife did the demo themselves. They’ve slowly been tackling house projects and trying to pay for them by flipping.

Tell Us About Your Upcoming Event?

Josh is hosting FlipCon in Charlotte, North Carolina. It’s an in-person reseller event. This is the second year and there will be different speakers including YouTubers and resellers. The event will be August 9-11. For a chance to learn more about resellers and YouTube, check it out!

Robert Stephenson

I grew up in Central Florida and have lived here my whole life. I first got into buying and selling items when I was 16 years old, and have been hooked ever since. It has mostly been a hobby that makes some extra cash, but sometimes it serves as my main income as well. I don't plan on stopping any time soon. I find too many fun toys for my family (or myself), and just love the whole process.
