Let’s talk about how you can make some cash over the summer!
We are in the process of planning our road trip for this summer, and we wanted to unpack what that looks like and how we actually go on a summer road trip for four to six weeks and make money while we do it.
Cash From Road Trip Flips
We started doing this in 2020. My brother-in-law passed away and we wanted to get my sister’s mind off of stuff, so we decided to go on a road trip with her and her two daughters to explore the country and visit national parks. My other sister decided to join as well, so we ended up getting a 15-passenger van to fit my two sisters, our four nieces, our three kids, Melissa and myself. The only problem was that we didn’t have room for the luggage. We decided to take our enclosed trailer and a little into the trip, I decided to start seeing what people were selling at nearby destinations.
At night at the hotels, I started looking for items in the next direction we were going and tried to set up meetups. We ended up buying some great items that sold for a lot when we got back. The first year we went from Florida out west for four to six weeks and spent $1,235 on seven items and sold the items for $22,175.
The second year we did a summer road trip we bought 14 items for $870 and sold them for $17,150. The third year we bought 17 items, purchased for $1,455 and sold for $25,250. And in 2023, we bought eight items for $1,100 and sold them for $21,500. That’s before eBay and shipping fees, but even with those other costs, we more than paid for our road trip each of the years we did this.
What this showed us, is that you can find items for great deals in rural parts of the country. We pick them up, put them on eBay and reach a national market where they can sell for what they’re actually worth.
Flips That Brought In Cash
On one trip we picked up a couple of TurboChef ovens that we had a great profit on. I found one while we were in Salt Lake City and sent an offer. We ended up leaving the next morning before I heard back. I later heard back from him and he took my offer of $500, down from $800 and we made plans to meet up on our way back through that area. When I arrived, he wheeled it out and mentioned he had three more so I asked him if he’d give me a better deal if I bought a second one. He took $400 a piece for two. Unfortunately that was all the cash I had on me, so I couldn’t take them all. But we sold one for $10,000 and one for $8,500 when we got back. Those were huge flips!
Another favorite road trip flip was the bus wash, which I found at the end of a trip somewhat close to home. I had sold one previously so I knew the value was there when I saw this flip. At that point, we had our enclosed trailer and I knew it wouldn’t fit the bus wash. So I sent the guy an offer and we made plans for me to come back the following weekend to pick it up with an open trailer. We bought that for $500 and sold it for around $14,500.
If you’re visiting somewhere, consider looking around the area to see what you could flip. It doesn’t hurt to send offers before you get to an area and be polite even if people don’t accept your offer. You can also check out thrift stores or flea markets near where you’re visiting. You never know what you’ll find.
Flea Market Suggestions For Our Summer Trip
This summer we’re planning another trip and we have an idea that we need your help with. We want to hear from you. Share some of your favorite flea markets that are close to you, or ones you have visited. We are going to pick a couple to stop at on our road trip this summer. And we’ll arrange a meetup to do a mastermind in those areas where we visit a flea market, walk around, find cool stuff, and talk about it. It will be an all inclusive day immersing people into this business. We’d love to meet new people on our next road trip and help them grow their business. Send your ideas to [email protected] or DM us on social media.
