Facebook Marketplace vs. eBay: Pros, Cons, & Which Makes You More Money

Thank you so much for spending your time with us! We would be so grateful if you could take a minute and leave us a review.

Let’s talk about selling on Facebook Marketplace versus eBay. We have recently been moving items from our warehouse shop over to our new house that we bought and we’ve been trying to liquidate some stuff on Facebook Marketplace.  We used to sell a lot of our big items on Marketplace and then just gravitated toward eBay. There is a reason why we sell probably 95% to 98% of our items on eBay. Facebook Marketplace is often meetups in person and you will find a lot of flaky people on Marketplace. There are a lot of people who say they’ll show up, or they’ll tell you a time that they want to be there, and then they ghost you.

Pros and Cons to Facebook Marketplace vs. eBay

One pro for Facebook Marketplace is that it does have a low barrier to entry. You snap a couple pictures. You list the item. There are no fees. You’re meeting up with somebody. It’s easier until it’s not. eBay can be a bit more complex when you’re first starting to learn, but in our mind it’s worth it.  Facebook Marketplace vs. eBay: Pros, Cons, & Which Makes You More Money Facebook does now have the ability to ship items to people but we don’t recommend that because they don’t have great customer service. It’s hard to get someone from Marketplace on the phone if you have questions or issues. With eBay, you can always get support to get somebody on the phone. That is why we choose eBay for selling and shipping items, versus Facebook Marketplace.

We love buying on Facebook Marketplace. We find amazing deals all the time on Facebook Marketplace, but we do not like selling on there as much as we like eBay. For example, last week, we listed a four-wheeler for $200 because something’s broken on it. Somebody who knew how to fix it could do it easily and get a great deal. We disclose everything and we put that in the title in all caps: “Not running, needs this XYZ, been sitting for years,” and we still got so many messages because people didn’t read the description. We pulled it off the listing because we were overwhelmed and then a few weeks later relisted it for $400. Someone on Facbeook then offered less, which is what you do, but some of them were rude about it saying, “You’re gonna take $200 because XYZ reason.” It’s fine to make an offer by saying , “Hey, I can give you $200 cash today,” but if someone is rude, that’s not going to get you a deal. We ended up selling the four-wheeler for $400.

Scheduling Meetups

Scheduling meetups on Facebook Marketplace can be challenging. People ghost you, or ask you to drive to them, or don’t tell you a correct time. With eBay, you ship it out and you don’t have to worry about meeting up with anybody. You don’t have to talk to anybody. You don’t have to deal with anybody. Now, you will occasionally have to deal with buyers and if there’s an issue or they want a refund, but it’s generally a lot less hassle. Facebook Marketplace vs. eBay: Pros, Cons, & Which Makes You More Money With eBay, you are listing everything and describing everything in detail and the buyer asks questions ahead of time and they buy it before you ship it. Marketplace doesn’t require them to do that before purchase, so you actually have to meet people in person before they pay you. And they can then decide they don’t want the item even after meeting you.

eBay is also on your own time frame for shipping within a certain number of days. With Marketplace, you have to coordinate schedules. If you are selling on Facebook Marketplace, you also have to take safety precautions. When you are selling on Marketplace, make sure that you’re meeting in a public place. And if you can’t, make sure you’re not alone if you have somebody come to your house to sell an item or pick up an item.

Also, make sure they pay you in cash. If they want to use PayPal or CashApp or online apps to pay, make sure you are logged in so you have the ability to see the money in your account before they take the item. There are scams out there where they’ll email a fake receipt but never actually pay you.

More Money On eBay

You can actually get more money for your items on eBay versus Marketplace, which is why we source Marketplace and sell on eBay. With Facebook, you’re limited to your local market only, so whatever is within that 250-mile radius on Marketplace. With eBay, you’re selling to a nationwide or global marketplace, meaning you can charge more.  The majority of our income is from eBay, and it’s an amazing place to be able to do that. If you don’t have an eBay account, get one set up today and just get started!

I grew up in Central Florida and have lived here my whole life. I first got into buying and selling items when I was 16 years old, and have been hooked ever since. It has mostly been a hobby that makes some extra cash, but sometimes it serves as my main income as well. I don't plan on stopping any time soon. I find too many fun toys for my family (or myself), and just love the whole process.
