Is This Flip Worth It?

Thank you so much for spending your time with us! We would be so grateful if you could take a minute and leave us a review.

Is this flip worth it? This is a new series we want to start.

We plan to dive into different flips to talk about whether they are worth it or not and we also want your input!

Is this worth it is probably the biggest question people have when they’re out sourcing and looking for items. There are a couple of different things we have to look at to make sure it will be worth it in the long run.

We’re going to break down a recent flip to figure out if it was worth our time.

Was This Recent Flip Worth It?

We recently sold a street lamp globe. It’s the style you would see on a lamp post along the street in a downtown city. I’ve sold a couple of these in the past. I actually pulled these out of a dumpster. They were probably overstock for some city or something like that. They weren’t glass, but almost like a plexiglass. We had zero dollars into this, but that doesn’t always mean something is worth your time. We generally want to 10x our investment so that gives us enough room for eBay fees, shipping costs, and our time invested.

I got four or five of these out of the dumpster and a couple of other things. I don’t typically jump into dumpsters, but my buddy had called me to look at this stuff. I have gotten cool chairs from a dumpster before from someone cleaning out a house and storage unit.

COGS (Cost of goods sold): $0
Sold: $229
Packing materials: $16 (boxes, bubble wrap, and packing peanuts)
eBay fees: $31
Shipping fees: $36
Profit: $148

How long did it take me to do the whole transaction? I had to get them from the dumpster. I didn’t really clean them up, just took photos and listed them. Then I had to pack them when they sold. I probably spent a little longer packing this because I made a video while doing it, so you could say I had 2 hours into it to make about $150. That’s about $75 an hour. Now it’s not our best hourly rate, but it’s decent money for something that I got for free.

How We Avoided A $1,900 Return Refund Request

Robert Stephenson

I grew up in Central Florida and have lived here my whole life. I first got into buying and selling items when I was 16 years old, and have been hooked ever since. It has mostly been a hobby that makes some extra cash, but sometimes it serves as my main income as well. I don't plan on stopping any time soon. I find too many fun toys for my family (or myself), and just love the whole process.
