You might have noticed a recent change to your eBay account. eBay is currently rolling out its new international shipping program, which will replace its global shipping option that has been out for years. Let’s talk about the changes you will see.
Almost everyone has probably been switched over to eBay’s new international shipping program by now.
Previously we have used global shipping, but we weren’t able to use it for freight items. We’ve shipped smaller items using the program. When I jumped into global shipping, I was like, “Why wouldn’t I do this?” It expands your reach.
One time we shipped a radio on a pallet through global shipping. When it got there, eBay couldn’t take it so they refunded the buyer but let us keep the money. They kept the item, which they probably auctioned off. It still worked out. That was back when global shipping was new and it was too large of an item for them to ship overseas so they just kept it at their hub and refunded both of us.
Differences Between Global And Internationl Programs
There really is not a big difference between global shipping and international shipping. The only one we’ve found is that eBay is going to go at bat for your item if you get a return or refund request
We felt like they did that with global, but we were not a high volume shipper with the program because our items were too big. Somebody who did high volume overseas might have had a different experience.
There’s no international fee so it’ll be a lower cost to your buyers too. There is really not a reason why you wouldn’t want to do it and add it to your listing.
If your buyer leaves you a negative feedback for delivery or damage, eBay will remove it because it was out of your control. eBay will also handle the returns. Once eBay receives the item, they’re taking full responsibility for it and the transaction after that point. All you have to do is get it to eBay’s hub.
To be eligible, your account just has to be in good standing, they say above standard or top-rated seller. You also cannot have a high rate of item not as described or returns.
New International Program Restrictions
The new eBay international program does have stipulations about how big the item can be and how heavy it can be.
The weight limit for international is 44 pounds or 66 pounds if you’re going from the U.S. to Canada. The size is 48 inches in length or 118 in length plus girth.
You might wonder what length plus girth is. You have the length, width, and height of the item. The longer dimension of the item, you keep it by itself, the two shorter dimensions of the item, you double those and then add all three dimensions together. Say you are shipping something that is in a box and it’s going to be a 15 by 15, by 40. You keep that 40 inches separate. The two 15 inches, you double them, so you’ll have 30 inches by 30 inches and then add the 40 to that. It will be 100 total for all of them. That will go in international shipping because that stays underneath the 118 inches.
If your item is within the dimensions and weight restrictions, we don’t see a reason to not list it with eBay’s international program.
Our take on it is if you’re not using international, you definitely should be using it because you’ll be able to reach more people.
