Distractions are everywhere. If you’re not careful, they can get in the way of your business growth and success. Today we’re going to share five distractions that can sabotage your reselling business.
Distraction #1 – Shiny Object Syndrome
If you’re an entrepreneur you probably have tons of ideas and because you have so many ideas, you may not have the best follow-through. You might have ideas all the time about different businesses to start. This is called shiny object syndrome.
I am the king of different businesses. When I teamed up with Melissa, she got me on track with this reselling business so we have seen growth throughout our marriage and the reselling business.
We listen to Alex Hormozi’s podcast and he says anything that you consistently do and you do it no matter what through time, you will see some success. When you invest in something over and over again you see the success.
Some of the businesses I thought about doing were a roofing company, pontoon boat tours, painting, advertising balloons, landscaping and parasailing. The parasailing did not work out. I had purchased a parasail at a yard sale and we had to buy rope for it and put our own clasps on the end. One went to the boat and the other to the parasail. While I was in the air the clasp popped off and smacked me in the head, knocking me out. Luckily I had a life jacket on and my friends got me out of the water. Needless to say, parasailing did not stick.
Alex Hormozi also says having too many side hustles can be tough because you’re invested in too many things instead of diving deep in one. For the last seven years, Melissa and I have been able to hone in on what our market is for flipping higher profit items and we’ve seen amazing results. In the last two months we had a $10,000 flip and a $7,500 flip.
Distraction #2 – Social Media
We all know social media is a distraction and yet it’s still easy to fall into the trap of scrolling. Just going on for a few minutes can lead to an hour of scrolling. If social media is a problem for you and is holding you back from your business, take a break. Focus on getting your items listed or taking pictures of them.
You can enjoy social media, but sometimes you need to focus on your business growth. If it’s a barrier for you, don’t be afraid to give it up for a while.
Distraction #3 – Television
This is more of a distraction for me than social media. I like to unplug by watching a movie at night. But we’ve given up the TV for short sprints so we can work to accomplish business goals. We work hard, from sunup to sundown in this business. Whether it’s flipping, coaching, or social media, it takes a lot of time and effort. There will be seasons where you do more and some where you do less.
If you have a chunk of time in your day, maybe you say you’re going to work for an hour on your listings instead of sitting down and watching TV.
Distraction #4 – Your Energy
If you don’t have enough energy to do the thing you need to do for your business, it can be a distraction. If you’re up too late watching TV or scrolling on your phone before bed, you might not be getting quality sleep. Maybe you need to move. That is something we value, and we run four days a week and walk every day. It just starts our day better and gets us energized and ready to tackle the day.
Moving more and sleeping better can help with energy levels.
Distraction #5 – People
This can be a tough one. Make sure that you’re not getting distracted by family and friends. This doesn’t mean ignore people, but pay attention to how much time you’re spending on the phone or investing into relationships that aren’t motivating you and encouraging you.
Being around negative people who drain your energy can be tough. Think about the five people you’re spending time with. Are they complainers? Are they building you up? Do they motivate you? Are they people that are complaining about their situation and they’re not doing anything to fix it?
It’s one of those things that you have to just really evaluate your time that you’re spending that you could be working on something else. Set boundaries with your time and designate times for business and time for people.
If you find yourself struggling to get stuff done for your reselling business, see if you are dealing with any of these five distractions and then make a plan to overcome them.
