Let’s review our top 10 flips of 2024 that made us over $20,000 in profit. We’ll share our cost of goods sold (COGS), eBay fees, shipping costs, and profits.
Item #10 – Cooktop With Downdraft
This went in two boxes when we sold it because the 30-inch glass cooktop and downdraft were in two pieces. The telescopic downdraft pops up and sucks the air out. It goes underneath the countertop.
During shipping, the downdraft got a bend in it and the buyer wanted to send it back for a refund. It was damaged by the shipping company, but we were covered by insurance, so it wasn’t a big deal.
We got paid out $1,000 for insurance, the shipping company did the inspection, and decided to return the items to us. There was nothing actually wrong with the cooktop, so we resold the cooktop. Sometimes the shipping company will take the units once they’re damaged, but they returned them to us this time. When I sold the cooktop again we got $550 for it. I’m going to see if I can relist the downdraft too with a disclosure about the damage.
Sold: $1,550 ($1,000 insurance plus $550 sale)
COGS: $40
eBay fees & shipping: $138
Profit: $1,372
We always recommend getting extra insurance past the basic $100 that comes with an item. You want to make sure you can get the full cost of what you would’ve made on an item back if it gets damaged in shipping. eBay will only let you insure up to $1,000 so if you’re selling something for more than that, you’ll have to go outside of eBay with another company like PirateShip.
Item #9 – Panini Press
Melissa spotted this panini press at the flea market and when we looked at it, we realized it was a commercial press in really good condition. We sold it super fast. I almost walked past this one too! The best part is that it went in a box, so I didn’t have to ship this on a pallet.
Sold: $1,500
COGS: $45
eBay Fees: $197
Shipping: $103
Profit: $1,155
Item #8 – Absen Hardware
This was an item where we bought a whole bunch of LED commercial panels and hardware in a package. The hardware package was $2,500 but I knew the value of this package new was $300,000-$400,000 and we got it all as a bundle.
The Absen hardware hang up LED panels and I got a couple of crates of these. We estimated the cost of each panel at $5. We’ve already made our money back on these, but we’re saying $5 for the cost of the item times 12 of them. They were super easy to package and shipped in a box.
Sold: $1,800
COGS: $60 ($5 x 12)
eBay fees: $197
Shipping: $92
Profit: $1,451
Item #7 – Absen Hardware
This was another set of 12 that sold, though I sold these for a bit more.
Sold: $2,000
COGS: $60 ($5 x 12)
eBay fees: $215
Shipping: $100
Profit: $1,625
Item #6 – Wolf Oven
I found this one while I was doing a training showing people how to source. We sourced this in our local area, and the guy who bought this was also local. He bought it on eBay, and picked it up so we didn’t have to pay for shipping.
Sold: $2,000
COGS: $150
eBay fees: $264
Shipping: $0
Profit: $1,586
Item #5 – Viking Convection Oven
We picked this oven up for next to nothing on one of our road trips and it was at least 40 years old. When I got there, the guy selling it said I could just have it for free, but I paid him what he was asking for it. We put it in the back of our trailer on the way home. This one did ship on a small pallet via freight.
So many people just want items gone, and they’re willing to sell them for cheap. They don’t want to mess with shipping, and if you’re willing to learn how to list and ship freight items, the profit is there.
Sold: $2,250
COGS: $40
eBay fees: $297
eBay promoted listing: $48
Shipping: $205
Profit: $1,660
Item #4 – Power Scooter
I got this power scooter from one of my flea market contacts who called me. We sold this on eBay for $4,000 initially, but there was a problem and it needed something repaired. I messaged the buyer and said something happened and it needed a part, so I was going to give him a refund. He asked me to sell it to him as is because he knew how to fix it. We agreed on a new price with a discount to offset the repair expenses. It was a little disappointing that the item didn’t work, but I still 10X’d the investment.
Sold: $2,500
COGS: $200
PayPal fees: $87
Shipping: $170
Profit: $2,043
Item #3 – Power Wheelchair
I found this one while doing a sourcing training as well. The lady who bought this was super grateful because she really needed it as the rented one she was using didn’t work well for her. I actually spent more money on shipping so it could go to her house rather than a commercial address and I got it shipped out as quickly as possible.
When I first picked this item up, I was worried about it because it smelled like cigarette smoke. I almost turned around, but I felt bad because I got there and didn’t want to back out on the seller because I could tell she needed the money. We tell people to walk away from a sale when they need to, so this was unusual for me. I ended up getting the smell out of it by purchasing a huge U-Haul mattress bag. I drove the wheelchair into the bag, and put tons and tons of baking soda inside the bag and on the wheelchair. Then I sealed it up for a week or two and when I took it out and cleaned it up, it didn’t smell like smoke anymore. I even put it in an enclosed space to test it.
Sold: $2,500
COGS: $250
eBay fees: $314
Shipping: $437
Profit: $1,499
Item #2 – Kenmore Elite Range
I picked this one up while we were on the road to the Florida Keys on a family vacation. We paid $120 for it and initially sold it for $3,400.
Sold: $3,400
COGS: $120
eBay Fees: $335
Shipping: $382
Profit: $2,563
When this arrived to the buyer, it was damaged. This was our first and only shipment that ever got damaged in freight. Somebody actually slid a fork above the pallet and damaged the bottom drawer, and it’s an older unit so it’s not easy to get parts for. The buyer wanted to return it, so we processed the return. Our freight broker went to bat for us and got us the full price of what we were selling it for because we had packaged it correctly and had it insured.
The item was insured for $4,000, covering pallet costs, and shipping, so I got a check for $4,000 from the shipping company. I also got the item returned to me, so I could probably sell it for parts or “as is” with the dent.
Insurance claim: $4,000
COGS: $120
Final profit: $3,880
Item #1 – Commercial Dishwasher
We got this one on a road trip back from my sister’s property in Georgia. I found this item, offered the seller $350, and he was excited about it. When we stopped by to pick it up, he powered it up for me and showed me there was nothing wrong with it. He loaded it into the back of our truck with a forklift too.
Sold: $6,000
COGS: $350
eBay fees: $401
Shipping: $553
Profit: $4,696
