We are excited to share an interview we did with Melissa Preble, a Flipper University alum.
Melissa worked for the U.S. Post Office for 26 years and stopped that job in 2020. The year prior she had found Flea Market Flipper on Facebook and was considering taking the leap into our course. Eventually she did, and now she’s seeing great success in her flips.
Are You Flipping As A Side Hustle?
Melissa says she doesn’t flip full-time, but this is her only gig at the time. She spends between 5-20 hours a week on it. She also spends time with her dad who is in a nursing home an hour away. Being a reseller gives her the flexibility she needs to be there for her dad.
Tell Us About A Win When You First Joined?
Melissa says the extra income has been able to help her pay down debt and save. It’s become pivotal in her budget.
What Was Your Mindset In the Beginning As A Reseller?
Melissa says she had a ton of stuff to list for free in the beginning. She went back on YouTube and watched every single video we had to help herself gear up for flipping. It showed her that reselling is sustainable and a viable income. In the Facebook group, she saw people flipping freight, so she told herself she could do it too. The very first freight item she listed was an iLevel power wheelchair that still hasn’t sold, but listing it was a symbolic crossing of a threshold. They weren’t going to unlist it. So if it sold, she’d figure out the freight. After that, she listed a stair stepper and a trash compactor, and eventually somebody bought the trash compactor. It was small, but 210 pounds, so it had to go freight.
What Did You Pay For It?
Melissa bought the trash compactor for $100 and had to buy a key for it because it was missing it, so she had another $50 in on that. It sold for $1,800 plus $300 shipping and she shipped it via freight. The net was a little over $1,200.
Talk About Your Mindset After It Sold
Melissa says she would 100% do freight shipping again. She went to the group and asked, “Why did I wait so long?” It’s a process to ship via freight but once you do it, it gets easier every time.
What Tip Would You Give To Someone Thinking About Becoming A Reseller?
Melissa says don’t overthink it. There are always people in the Flipper University group to help if you get in a bind. Just do it and keep doing it. Don’t let an item sit on the shelf. List it and list often. It will sell and the money will come in.
What Did You Have To Do to Take It To The Next Level?
Melissa had not committed to a side hustle at that point and was still working her full time gig. She and her husband loved to treasure hunt, and had a bunch of smalls. They decided they have to stop doing smalls and focus on larger profit items and clearing out what they have. Melissa’s goal is to move exclusively to freight.
What Made You Decide To Go All In As A Reseller?
Melissa says it wasn’t a big hurdle to do it. She had watched our content for a while and just had to think about it. Once she did, she was all in. She wanted to turn it from a hobby into an actual side hustle.
Who Do You Recommend Flipper University for?
Melissa says the program is for all types of people. She’s even shown people her numbers. eBay has 90-day totals available and it shows people that things are selling.
