eBay Fees Explained: What It Really Costs to Sell

# eBay Fees Explained

If you’re trying to figure out whether flipping is even worth it, the fees are the first thing to understand. They’re not the scary part most people assume, as long as you build them into the math from the start.

Here’s the plain version of what selling on eBay actually costs.

The main fee

eBay takes roughly 13 percent of your sale price, plus a small fixed fee per order. It varies a little by category, but 13 percent is the number to plan around.

A real example from our own sales: a $900 item ran about $118 in eBay fees. On a $500 sale, the fee came to about $71.

Shipping is your second cost

Shipping is the quiet margin killer. On big items it can be your second biggest line item after the sold price itself. Before you buy anything, know roughly what it costs to ship. Some items are cheap to ship but profit anyway. Others look like great flips until you realize the freight eats it.

The fee math, end to end

Here’s a $10 stainless steel valve we flipped:

  • Sold for: $900
  • eBay fees: $118
  • Shipping: $47
  • Cost of goods: $10

Profit: around $716, on a $10 buy.

That’s the whole trick. You can’t control the 13 percent fee, but you can control the buy price. That’s why we say your money is made in the buy. Get the item cheap enough that fees, shipping, and your time are already covered, and the 13 percent stops mattering.

Two small things that help

  • List just under a round number. $599 reads cheaper than $600 even though it costs you a dollar.
  • Price around 50 percent of retail for used goods, up to 75 percent for new with tags.

The fees are predictable. Build them in before you buy, and they stop being a surprise.

I grew up in Central Florida and have lived here my whole life. I first got into buying and selling items when I was 16 years old, and have been hooked ever since. It has mostly been a hobby that makes some extra cash, but sometimes it serves as my main income as well. I don't plan on stopping any time soon. I find too many fun toys for my family (or myself), and just love the whole process.
