But have you ever thought about what a small amount of money could do? Our Flipper U alum, Stacy, decided to make money flipping and started with just $0.50…
And let’s just say she turned it into quite a bit of money!
After just two years, Stacy hit $100K in sales investing nothing else but that original $0.50!
It’s crazy, but she did it and we are super stoked to share her story with you!
Two Quarters Changed My Life
“What could I do with just $0.50?” That was a question I asked myself in July of 2018.
I don’t know about you, but if I reach down in my couch cushions or in the cup holders in my car, I am bound to find some stray quarters lying around.
Most of the time the coins are sitting in my car stained with my spilled coffee or are sharing space with some potato chip crumbs that fall between the cushions.
I have never really given them a second thought that I could make money flipping with two quarters!
So to say that $0.50 changed my life is a pretty stunning statement! But that’s exactly what happened to me!
My husband and I had decided we wanted to purchase a used RV for our next travel adventure. We’d been out of debt (including the house) since 2016, so taking out a loan to fund our travel was out of the question.
Our house rule is if we can’t pay for something cash, then we can’t afford it.
That started me on a month-long investigation on how I could come up with some quick cash to buy the RV. I knew I could easily work like a crazy person picking up extra shifts at the hospital working as an RN. But I had just done that the year before saving to go to Europe.
Even though our three week backpacking trip through Italy, Spain, and France was amazing and one I will never forget, I had worked so hard the year before and sacrificed and traded in a lot of my valuable time.
This time I wanted to do things differently. I wanted to work smarter, not harder and I knew there must be a way to accomplish that!
My research included
- Dog walking
- Serving court papers
- Working crazy shifts at the hospital (and a lot of them!)
And the list goes on and on!
Work Smarter, Not Harder
One day while searching, I came upon a video of Rob and Melissa talking about their flipping business. I really loved their energy, honesty, and how they were able to make money flipping and using a different business model. I liked that they were selling low volume with higher ticket items and the idea made total sense.
I was also intrigued by freight shipping – even though I had no idea how to do it at the time and wondered if I could use freight shipping to make money flipping for myself.
As I watched the video, I said inside myself, “I can totally do this.”
When I shared it with my husband, let’s just say he wasn’t that excited about it! But in my heart, I knew I could do it and it would only be a matter of time before my husband would be on board with my flipping adventures!
That’s when I said to myself, “I wonder what I could do with just $0.50?” That morning, I went out to a yard sale and purchased a center hub cap for a Dodge Ram Truck. I listed it and sold it the same day for $75.
This sale gave me confidence and I knew I could make money flipping just like Rob and Melissa were doing.
From that first sale, I sourced more items to sell and it just took off from there. To this day, I have never put in any other money into my business other than the profits from the original $0.50 investment!
Not a bad return on investment!
In a year and a half, I had $20K in the bank for my RV! I’ve also been able to buy all of shipping items, inventory, storage unit, trailer and tow package and so much more, never investing any of my personal money into my business!
Never underestimate those quarters that slid down your couch cushion! You can make money flipping with your spare change and it can change your life.
People have asked me how I did it. Honestly, it wasn’t just one thing, but a combination of things that helped me succeed in the business.
I Didn’t Let Fear Stop Me
I’m going to let you in a secret. When I started flipping, I was completely and utterly paralyzed with fear. I don’t mean a little scared, I mean, I was totally frightened!
This is really an important part of my journey to $100K and just the ability to make money flipping period. In all honesty, it would have been so much easier to avoid what made me scared and not do it.
But I didn’t and I believe that was a huge part of my success and how I’ve been able to make money flipping.
When I first got started and decided I was going to flip larger, more expensive items. I had no idea what I was doing. In fact, I had never shipped anything larger than what I could have shipped in a small USPS box.
I had never shipped anything fedex. I had never shipped anything UPS.
So I was really new to the whole idea of shipping something large and it was scary. I mean really scary.
I was venturing into a whole new territory of selling on eBay and I had fears that I would spend money getting it shipped only to find out the person had a problem with the item and I would lose money. Or I would get it there and not ship it correctly and there would be damage to the item.
But my fears were quickly put to rest when I sold and shipped my first few large items and found that everything can be figured out – even if there is a problem (which actually is pretty rare!)
With my new experience making money flipping and shipping large items, I started picking things I thought I could sell without knowing exactly how I would do it. I started telling myself it was ok that I didn’t know everything and in the end, it really was ok!
I would buy it, clean it up, list it, sell it and then figure out how I was going to ship it later!
From Paralyzing Fear to Shipping Large Items
One of my first items that I sold was a Viking cooktop. It was 36” long and almost weighed 100 lbs. I picked it for $100 and sold it for $1,000 eight days later.
For the first day after I sold it, I didn’t even go outside to look at it. I spent a sleepless night thinking I had bitten off way more than I could chew and I wasn’t sure how I was going to ship it. I was scared and anxious and just didn’t know what to do.
The next day, I forced myself to go out to my garage and inspect it. I spent a great deal of time thinking it through how I could ship it.
I had all of the resources of Flipper University so I watched several videos and also used the resources of the Flipper U facebook community.
As I allowed myself to move past my fears, I found myself measuring the cooktop, cutting the styrofoam, padding all of the parts and packing them together.
Next, I found myself boxing it entirely by myself!
And by a miracle of God, I was at the fedex store dropping it off to be shipped. It was so heavy, I couldn’t even lift it by myself!
As I continued to force myself past my fears and challenge myself to ship larger and larger items, my fear didn’t have as much power over me. I was finding freedom and courage to take more chances, learn more, and make larger and larger sales!
I started accepting challenges and even set backs when things didn’t go my way. Because let’s face it, if you want to make money flipping, there will certainly be mistakes you will make. You can’t give up when things don’t go your way.
I even found that every mistake or problem I had was able to be figured out and that kept me going and reaching for new challenges.
As I learned and grew in confidence – So did the size of the items I was shipping! My husband and I decided pretty early on in our flipping business that if we wanted to reach new heights with our income, we would need to include freight shipping.
So we did!
At first, it was scary and intimidating. But taking what we learned from Rob & Melissa and the other course members, we were able to quickly move past our fears and to date, we have freight shipped many items with no problems.
In all honesty, freight shipping is one of the main reasons we were able to reach $100K so quickly – and it’s not as scary as it seems.
I Invested in Knowledge
In 2018, when I decided to jump into selling larger items using freight shipping, I was hung up on investing in Flipper U. After all, I was trying to save money not spend it. So it was a difficult decision for me and one that I should have made months before I did (I followed Rob & Melissa on social media for a few months before jumping in to Flipper U!)
As I thought about the decision to invest in Flipper U, I thought about my own nursing career and how I had invested years of my life studying and thousands of dollars later, I became a nurse.
Someone had to put together a nursing program with years of knowledge, experience, and time put into it – and they weren’t giving it out for free. It was an investment for my future and I wasn’t going to get where I wanted to go without investing the time and finances into that education.
The same would be the case for my flipping career. Rob and Melissa had years of experience and I was essentially paying for their knowledge and experience.
With Rob’s experience and knowledge, he had figured out the ins and outs of flipping and making a great living – and he was willing to teach me. And to me, it was worth it!
And boy, was it ever worth it. I call it the gift that keeps giving. Every day I watch Rob with his live training, videos, and posts in our course members group and I literally learn something every single day.
So my success with flipping hasn’t been a big secret. I just watched the professionals (Rob & other successful flippers in the flipping community) and then applied it to my business habits and I got the same results. And you can too!
Pretty simple really.
I Set Realistic Goals That Were Visible
Success with flipping wasn’t an overnight matter. It’s not a get rich scheme that guarantees success overnight while you sit around and do nothing.
Quite the contrary!
I worked hard…every day. And I realized that it would take time for me to get where I wanted to go and patience would be required.
For years, I’ve had several business ideas that I wanted to do. The results would pretty much go the same way.
I’d get excited, start it, expect to be successful right away, get frustrated, and give up.
That repeated itself for a few business ideas that I had.
But this time, I made realistic goals that I could see and meet! I took the goals that I wanted to reach and put them out on a goal board. I made it fun by crossing off each box as I crushed the goals I had set for myself.
This gave me quick wins, motivated me, and stretched me to believe I could hit $100K!
In the beginning, when I thought about hitting $100K, it seemed so impossible and hard to fathom that I could actually do it.
As the months went by, I saw the boxes being crossed off my goal board and I got closer and closer to hitting the goal until finally – I hit $100K!!!
Making my goals realistic and visual really helped me stay focused, motivated, and gave the courage to keep going. I never thought I could but I did! I continue to do this with all the goals that I have set for myself.
So what’s next? Another $100K in 2021!
I Was Consistent – Even When I Didn’t Feel Like It!
With any business, there can be ups and downs – and the same goes for flipping.
When I started out, it was a slow start. I had slow days and even slow months. It seemed like I was working super hard and not making any progress. It would sometimes take days for me to find an item to flip (before I got good at it) only to see I would get a return request from one of my buyers.
There would be days and weeks that it was one step forward and two steps back.
Some days I would be frustrated from the learning curve, burnt out, or just plain lazy.
But there is one thing I have done throughout the whole time I’ve been flipping. I’ve remained consistent – even when I didn’t feel like it!
I continued to source daily.
I continued to list items daily.
I continued to gain knowledge daily.
I did this even when my mind was telling me not to. And this consistency has really paid off!
Rob gave me the best advice in the very beginning of my business when I was going slower than I wanted to and feeling the effects of the learning curve.
Rob told me, “Keep sourcing and listing, and one day you will make money flipping on a consistent basis.”
He was so right! I continued to source and build my inventory and I started making a full-time income working part time hours!
I even managed to make over $4,000 on a 30 day road trip in the summer – And I wasn’t even home to work the business!
Consistency is one of my top tips. If you are consistent with all aspects of the business – sourcing, fixing, cleaning, listing, and shipping, you will make a great living at this business!
I Hung Out With People Who Believed in Me
A few years ago, my daughter started getting Cs and Ds in her classes. We were flabbergasted as she’s super smart and catches on to things quickly.
We were watching her send in work that had no quality to it. She never wanted to get up in the morning to go to school. She didn’t care about anything, she had a terrible attitude, and didn’t even care what she looked like when she went to school!
As we dug deeper into her situation, we found out that one of her teachers had told a student that she didn’t like my daughter.
It may not have been that obvious what she said, but my daughter interpreted the comment and that the teacher didn’t like her.
And that little comment made a huge difference. It caused my daughter to be completely unmotivated!
Because of this negative (and ignorant) comment this teacher made, it made my daughter not want to put forth any effort in her classes.
So she ended the year with several Cs and Ds and couldn’t wait to be done with the school year.
But then it happened!
The next year, she had a teacher who was excited about learning, helped my daughter find her gifts, and she expressed that she believed in her!
You can probably guess what happened.
Miraculously, my daughter went from Cs and Ds to As and Bs. She jumps out of bed in the morning, instead of sleeping in. She cares about her work and has such a great attitude. She loves reading and learning.
Not only that, she has goals that she knows she can meet because she has someone who encourages her and believes in her!
What a difference!
There is something really magical about surrounding yourself with people who believe in you! And I have that with my flipping family.
Rob and Melissa constantly told me I could do it. The course members in the group were like cheerleaders the entire time. They kept me going and kept me believing that one day I could get there.
And then something amazing happened.
I started to believe it!
And then I did it.
And then others did it!
As my flipping family encouraged me and believed in me to hit my goal, others started to believe it for themselves. Other course members were hitting huge milestones like $1K, $5K, $10K and even $100K!
We all started to make money flipping!
If there is anything you can learn from my experience, learn this. Surround yourself with people who are winning and people who dare to believe in you! You will never be the same!
It’s powerful and life changing and I owe it all to my Flipper U family for helping me see the vision and bring $100K into reality!
