9 Things To Remember To Pack on a Road Trip To Source Used Items

road trip

We just left for a 5 week trip all across the U.S. to pick used items to sell. We are making several stops across multiple states for four weeks and then we will hit the 127 yard sale. We have certain things to remember to pack whenever we go on a long trip.

We will start in Michigan and work our way down to Alabama over 4 days, and then home to Florida.

All along the way we plan to source items to bring home and sell.

As we were getting ready for our trip, we realized that there are several items that we always take with us. We thought we would share them.

The 9 things to remember that are important to take with you on a long road trip when you are sourcing things to sell are:

#1 – An atlas or a really good road map

I am talking about an actual printed atlas or map. This one makes me laugh, because I never think we need it, but Melissa does. She is actually right though. We ended up lost a few years ago with no cell service and no internet.

If you don’t know how to read a map, it is worth learning. Even though I tease Melissa about this one, I do feel better knowing we have one.

#2 – A trailer

If you are going to source items on a long road trip, you need a trailer. We have an enclosed trailer that allows us to pick up items and store them inside. It is a great investment. You can rent one too if you don’t have one.

Our trailer is also where we are able to store some items for the trip too.

#3 – Tools

You always need tools when going on a long trip. You need tools to change tires, and do some necessary maintenance. You also need some tools for things you source. Basic tools are a must on a road trip.

#4 – Spare Tires

The fourth thing to remember to always bring, is multiple spare tires. Because, you never know when you will get a flat. I have spare tires for the truck and the trailer.

There have been too many occasions when we have gotten flat tires, and I just never want to be in a situation where we don’t have one.

#5 – Tie down straps

When I am going to be sourcing items to sell I always being tons of tie down straps. They are great for strapping things down inside the trailer so they don’t fly around.

Harbor Freight has a great deal on straps for cheap. Lots of other places have them too.

#6 – Blankets

I always bring a big stack of moving blankets to wrap items we source. This helps with making sure things you buy don’t get damaged.

I use blankets to wrap items before I strap them down.

#7 – Gas tanks

In case of emergency, running low on gas and being in the middle of nowhere, I always bring 2 5 gallons gas tanks.

They give you peace of mind. I don’t always need them, but it is nice to know we have them.

#8 – Spare batteries

With summer heat, batteries die more often. You also just never know when you will need one.

For this trip, I packed one for the truck and then I also packed a jet ski battery in case I need it to test an item we source.

#9 – AAA

The last thing to remember to have is a AAA membership. We have had one for years and man has it come in handy sometimes.

Last year, we took a month-long road trip with our family, my 2 sisters and my nieces. Out of no where, the 15 passenger van we had died. Thank god for AAA. They towed the van with all of us in it to the nearest city where the van could go to a mechanic.

It is a comfort knowing that we have AAA and they are just a call away. They jump batteries, tow your vehicle, change tires, unlock your vehicle if you leave your keys inside, and so much more. You may have to wait a while but it is so worth it.

Robert Stephenson

I grew up in Central Florida and have lived here my whole life. I first got into buying and selling items when I was 16 years old, and have been hooked ever since. It has mostly been a hobby that makes some extra cash, but sometimes it serves as my main income as well. I don't plan on stopping any time soon. I find too many fun toys for my family (or myself), and just love the whole process.
